Comedy traditions across cultures

Every culture has a different shape for its jokes, and studying those shapes is a way of studying what each culture finds most unbearable about itself. Nasreddin's humor travels because it targets universal prey: the pompous judge, the self-important scholar, the man who knows the price of everything and the wisdom of nothing. The joke that crosses a language barrier is carrying something more portable than a punchline.
