PTSD and trauma

Trauma is the imprinting of overwhelming experience as saṃskāra — grooves in the nervous system that continue to discharge long after the original event has passed. The body holds what the mind cannot fully process, and the symptoms of PTSD are the organism's ongoing attempt to complete an interrupted survival response. Healing requires working with both the stored impression and the present-moment body that carries it.
