I want to leave something to causes I care about—no one knows

You have already decided something in your heart. But a decision that lives only in the mind is not yet a decision. It is a hope. Hope cannot sign a check or divide an estate. Ask who is served by your silence. Not the cause you love—it cannot plan for a gift it does not know exists. Not the people you leave behind—they cannot honor a wish they were never told. Not even you, since the wish dies with you unless someone else carries it forward in writing. This problem is not hard by nature. It is hard only because it has been left undone. Name the cause. Name the share or the amount. Put it somewhere the law and your family can both see it. That is the whole task.

A wish kept only in your head helps no one. It cannot divide money, and it dies when you die. Reason asks: what good is a decision no one can find? Write it down, name the cause and the amount, and put it where the law can see it.
