Why haven't I updated who gets my money when I die?

You know the names on those forms are wrong. An ex-spouse who is no longer your spouse. A parent who has died. A sibling you no longer speak to. The paper does not know any of this has changed — it only knows what you told it years ago, and it will act on that old instruction unless you correct it. Ask who is served by leaving it as it stands. Not the estranged sibling, who reason does not entitle to what you no longer intend for them. Not the ex-spouse, who has no rightful claim once the marriage has ended. Not you, who carries a small worry each time you remember it is undone. Delay serves no one. It only postpones a decision you have, in your heart, already made. This is not really about paperwork. It is about whether your intentions and your documents agree. Reason asks for that agreement, plainly and without excuse.

The legal fact that beneficiary forms override wills needs brief teaching, but the real work is breaking through avoidance and taking the specific actions.

What’s really going on

Reason gives a simple answer: a form should name the truth of your life now, not your life ten years ago. This is not a moral failure — it is an unfinished task. Make one list of every account, decide who deserves each one today, and change the forms this week. Nothing more is required.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveWrite down every account, policy, and fund you own on one page — do not skip the small ones
A movePull the actual current beneficiary form for each item, not your memory of it
A moveFor each account, write the name of who should receive it now, in plain words
A moveCall or log into one institution today and submit the change — do not wait to do all of them at once
A movePut a date on your calendar two years from now to check this list again

What changes unlock by starting

  • A single list showing every account and its current, correct beneficiary
  • Forms that match the people actually in your life now
  • No account left to be decided by a stranger's default rule instead of your own reasoned intent
  • One less unfinished thing quietly weighing on you
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Zera’s live plan for your version of it.
